Working Title Mapping the Spatiotemporal Variation of Groundwater and its Impact on Water Security in an island landscape - a Quantitative and Qualitative modeling study of Water Resources at Karainagar Island, Jaffna Karainagar Island, Jaffna, Sri Lanka (Spatial ground elevation) Water security is a critical issue, particularly in island landscapes where access to freshwater resources is limited and vulnerable to various factors such as climate change, population growth, and overexploitation. Karainagar Island in Jaffna, known for its unique geographical setting and water challenges, serves as an excellent case study to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of groundwater resources and its implications for water security.                      Seasonal drought This study aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the spatiotemporal variation of groundwater particularly freshwater at Karainagar Island, Jaffna. Jaffna Healthy City project is currently homed at Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. As the revival of Jaffna after three decades war, the urbanization was causing a massive strain making the city to burst at the seams with congestion and unclean environments. The encompassing strain was being experienced in the water supply system, sanitation, food safety, housing and working conditions and the fast and complicated lifestyle of Jaffna’s citizens.  This project helps working in tandem to build on the resources and strengths to promote the health of the people in this resilient city. Rural Ponds Rejuvenation

Image
I am being coordinating to rural ponds rejuvenation projects under YWP . A rural pond was selected in the village named Thellipalai to rejuvenate with the support of farmers and other beneficiaries. Youth groups from the village joined hands together with us to make this change happen in a efficient sustainable way. They are monitoring the water levels weekly of the pond and adjacent 30 wells located within 50m proximity of this pond. Existing ecology in the pond; plants, species, habitats has been mapped. Further, beneficiary communities (farmers, fishermen, washerman) were engaged in Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and their requirements and current situations identified.

The College of Education at Vavuniya, Sri Lanka is working with YWP in addressing the challenges of untreated wastewater disposal. I have coordinated YWP to assess the technical, financial, social, and environmental aspects of a potential wastewater management system for the College of Education, which can be applicable to other educational institutions in near future.  As the first step, we have conducted site assessments to understand the current status, examine the demographic, social, economic and environmental aspects and determine the quantity and quality of wastewater generated by the institution. This was followed by an evaluation of the available treatment technologies, including conventional methods.  The College of Education, Vavuniya extends in 57 hectares and accommodates approximately 500 inhabitants at a time including staff quarters and hostels. About 530 m 3 of water is extracted daily from existing two dug wells and tube wells for drinking and other purposes. The maj
