Climathon is a global hackathon-style event focused on addressing climate challenges, and the steering committee plays a critical role in organizing and coordinating the event. Climathon 2.0 at Jaffna aimed to help solve Jaffna’s climate challenges at a local level and make the region more resilient to climate change and through hackathons, dialogue series, awareness and advocacy campaigns it creates network opportunities for young social entrepreneurs with local leaders from academia, business and public authorities.
I have served as one of the steering committee member at Climathon 2.0 held on 13-15 November 2020 at Jaffna. As a steering committee member I have been involved in theme and challenge selection, event planning and strategy making, outreaching sponsors, experts and enthusiasts, coordinating, financial oversight and reporting. Further, I have organized the dialogues, awareness and advocacy campaigns prior to the Climathon event.
Three themes have been selected.
1. Climate-resilient sustainable food & water systems for Jaffna
2. Enforcing Sustainable waste management practices in Jaffna
3. Digital transformation in the education sector during and beyond Covid-1
35 young groups were participated with different innovative ideas to build resilience in the local community towards climate change by fostering innovation at all levels and enabling systemic transformation.
By serving as a steering committee member at Climathon 2.0, I could develop my passion for climate actions, awareness on sustainability, and could work more intimate on the climate crisis existing in Jaffna.
